MLK Jr. Parade, Pt. 4: When Good is Evil and Evil Good (Special “Atheist Tuesday” Edition)

It’s not unusual or remarkable that the gay pride contingent marches in nearly every parade that the evangelism team visits. We have no particular agenda for this group other than to get the Gospel out to as many of the members of this community as possible. (Click here to start at part 1.)

What stunned me was a comment made as I handed out Gospel tracts to the “Black and Gay and Here to Stay” crowd. One rather aggressive lady dressed in white started grabbing the tracts from the marchers. When I asked her why she was doing this she said,

Atheist Tuesday: “Just live the life” Evangelism

Several months ago I wrote a controversial article explaining to atheists why evangelists must share their faith; I entitled it “The Drowning Woman” and received over 130 comments. In a nutshell, I compared the unbeliever to a woman who doesn’t realize  that she is drowning, and the evangelist/lifeguard must do whatever is necessary to rescue her, even if it may appear rude. (Click here to read it.)

An atheist then brought in his viewpoint: That article, “The Relaxing Man,” essentially describes the atheist as a man enjoying a pleasant lull on the grass in a park when suddenly he is accosted by a crazy person, the evangelist. (Read that here.)

But the most curious comment was from a guy named Bizzle, who calls himself a Christian, but has different ideas on how evangelism should be performed. Here’s his perspective:

As for the evangelism question, I would have to say I evangelize passively, but I’m not sure that’s a correct description. I’ve tried to preach and it doesn’t work for me and there are two reasons for that:

Atheist Tuesday: Good Samaritan Evangelism

I was encouraged to read this from the weekly Living Waters Newsletter (sign up here); I hope you will be as well:

A few years ago, we told you that an atheist was having financial troubles, and many of you kindly sent him gifts. This week he wrote to Mark Spence and said:

“Dear Mark …. about three years ago we talked on the phone. Even though I insulted and berated you, you proved that you were the real deal and a true follower of Christ by loving your enemy and blessing him. You responded with kindness even though I insulted you viciously. In addition you even helped me financially as well as some of the followers of Way of the Master. You guys really saved me from a disaster because I had no income and if I didn’t get those MRIs and other medical tests, I never would have gotten the social security disability income on which I now survive. I just wanted to say I will never forget you, Ray and the other Way of the Master followers. I want to thank you very much again.”

I followed up with Mark and asked if there was any other information he could provide to round out the story. This is what he said:

Atheist Tuesday: A Special Message from Charles Spurgeon

As I was reading my devotional, “Morning and Evening,” by Charles Spurgeon on New Year’s Eve before bedtime, I couldn’t help thinking that these words, written 150 years ago, are still applicable to the unbelieving mind.

Please read and take heed in this New Year.

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” – Jeremiah 8:20

Not saved! Dear reader, is this your mournful plight? Warned of the judgment to come, bidden to escape for your life, and yet at this moment not saved! You know the way of salvation, you read it in the Bible, you hear it from the pulpit, it is explained to you by friends, and yet you neglect it, and therefore you are not saved. You will be without excuse when the Lord shall judge the quick and dead.
