BIG ROCKS FIRST! (The Poke-in-the-Eye Devotional, 1/3/24)

WHAT DO YOU SEEK FIRST?

Seeking Jesus first means you will have to adjust your daily schedule. It may mean getting up a little earlier.

If you miss reading the Word because you are too busy, then you are too busy.

There was a time management expert who was speaking to a group of business students.

He pulled out a large, wide-mouth jar and filled it with fist-sized rocks. When he couldn’t put any more in, he asked, “Is this jar full?”

The class responded, “Yes.”

He said, “Really?” Then he pulled out a bucket of gravel and poured it in, shaking it down through the cracks. He asked again, “Is the jar full?”

The students were onto him now, so they said, “No.”

“Good,” he replied. He then dumped in a bucket of sand. Once more he asked, “Is the jar full?”

“No,” they all shouted.

Once more he said, “Good.”

Next, he poured in a pitcher of water until the jar was full to the brim. Then he asked, “What is the point of the illustration?”

One student shouted, “No matter how full your schedule, if you try hard, you can always fit more in.”

“No,” the speaker replied, “that is not the point. The point is, if you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.”

What should our “big rocks” be as believers? They should be Jesus and

His Word!

Put them first in your life because all the other things we do are pebbles, sand, and filler.

Or, should I say: wood, hay, and stubble?
