A TALE OF TWO CONVICTS (The Poke-in-the-Eye Devotional, 1/4/24)

I USED TO VISIT TWO MEN IN THE COUNTY JAIL EACH WEEK.

The first man I visited had stopped going to church and said that was the reason why he was behind bars. I assumed he stopped reading his Bible, too.

“How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?” (Proverbs 1:22)

The other man I visited, got out of jail and took with him some Bible material. “Have you learned your lesson?” I asked. He said yes.

He professed faith in Christ, came to church, then suddenly stopped and went missing. A year later he was found dead.

“If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.” (Proverbs 1:23)

Elisabeth Elliot said, “The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.”

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” (Psalm 119:9)

Sin will keep you from the Bible or the Bible will keep you from sin.

That first man I visited in jail is now free, sold out for Christ, living a productive life.

And yes, he’s reading his Bible.

Are you reading yours? Daily?

** I started these daily “Poke in the Eye” devotions in August, 2022, based on whatever verse(s) “speak” to me as I read the Old and New Testaments, Psalms and Proverbs from “The One Year Bible.”
