Those Lying, Cheating, Thieving Students

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

“Why do you come out here every week and say the same thing? Nobody’s listening. Nobody cares.”

In essence, those are the sentiments of the students at Leuzinger and Hawthorne High Schools, who hear us preach on a corner nearly every Tuesday after school ends. I thought to myself, Why are we here? What difference does our preaching make?

I heard a true account from a pastor friend of mine who brought it all into perspective. He told about some friends who call themselves Christians. They allow their 16-year-old son to drink alcohol, even encouraging his friends to do so, as long as they do it in their homes, supervised. “They just don’t want their son to drink and drive, so they have sleep-overs at his parents’ house.” Then he said something that jolted me: “There’s no standard. These parents just have no standard for their kids!”

I thought about that statement. Standard, standard… these kids have no standard… A light went on in my head. That’s why we preach. That’s why week after week we declare God’s standard, the 10 Commandments, because this generation of students has no one to teach them what God requires.

“Listen up kids! If you died today where would you go, Heaven or Hell? Here’s a quick test: Have you kept the 10 Commandments? If you’ve ever lied one time, stolen one thing, if you’ve ever misused God’s name, then God will see you as lying, thieving, blasphemers. On Judgment Day you will be found guilty and end up in Hell.”

“Shut up!” they shout. Sometimes they swear, sometimes they blaspheme. Obscene gestures are made. Mostly we’re ignored. Still the standard is preached.

“Commandment 7 says that you shall not commit adultery, but Jesus says that even if you look with lust you’ve committed adultery already in your heart. Commandment 6: You shall not murder, but the Bible calls hatred murder.”

Who will teach them God’s standard for right living, for a civilized society? The vast majority of people—even Christians—cannot even recite the 10 Commandments. And they’ve been taken down from most public institutions. Everyone did as they saw fit.

A recent study of 29,760 high school students nationwide, from both public and private schools revealed this:

30% of students have stolen from a store in the past year.
42% said they sometimes lie to save money.
64% cheated on a test in the past year.
93% said they were satisfied with their personal ethics and character

Good people don’t need a standard; they are a standard unto themselves. That’s why we preach the timeless, immutable standard, so students—all people—will see that that no one does good, not even one. To preach the standard is to show that no one can keep it, that everyone falls short, everyone stands condemned before God.

But we also bring good news of great joy that will be for all people. A Savior has been born; he is Christ the Lord.

“But if you repent, turn away from your sins, have a change of mind about your sins, and trust in Jesus Christ, God will forgive you. Jesus died on a cross for all your sin, he was buried for three days and rose again to give you the hope of eternal life.”

Today’s lying, cheating, thieving student will grow up to be tomorrow’s lying, cheating, thieving investment banker, wall street broker, governor, or president. Unless they understand that there is a standard by which they will be held accountable, there is absolutely no hope for them, or for us.

In that same study of students, 77% said that “when it comes to doing what is right, I am better than most people I know.”

Are you willing to be a standard bearer, too?

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) wrote this:
“God never clothes men until He has first stripped them, nor does He quicken them by the gospel till first they are slain by the Law [The Standard]. When you meet with persons in whom there is no trace of conviction of sin, you may be quite sure that they have not been wrought upon by the Holy Spirit; for ‘when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.’ “

Mirror Christianity

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I am reading Mere Christianity at the moment and was inspired to share this quote from C.S. Lewis on the purpose of the Moral Law in showing sinners their need for forgiveness:

Christianity tells people to repent and promises them forgiveness. It therefore has nothing (as far as I know) to say to people who do not know they have done anything to repent of and who do not feel that they need any forgiveness. It is after you have realized that there is a Moral Law, and a power behind the law, and that you have broken that law and put yourself wrong with that Power—it is after all this, and not a moment sooner that Christianity begins to talk. Islam, Rod Stewart, and Clueless Christians

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I am sure surprised at the zeal in which Muslims in Sudan reverence their prophet Muhammad.

According to the L.A. Times: Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Rod Stewart expressed his disgust at the language used by the entertainment during Al Gore’s Live Earth concerts in Great Britain. According to Mastermedia’s newsletter, The Mediator, Rod referred to the “effing” and such as, “It just sounded so cheap.”

Rod is now putting his money where his mouth is promising to pay 10 pounds (about $20.00) to everybody in any of his audience if he swears on stage.

Now compare “Christians’ ” reverence for their Savior:

Witness on Wheels

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Charles Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, said this about 150 years ago: “Speak a word for the Master whenever it is possible, and offer a short prayer at every convenient opportunity.”
null
“I think we should make it a rule, whenever we hear a foul or blasphemous word in the street – (and, alas! We constantly do so) – always to pray for the person who utters it. Perhaps then the devil might find it expedient not to stir up people to swear, if he knew that it excited Christians to pray.”
null
“Try it at all events, and see whether it may not have subtle power to stop the profanity, which is so terribly on the increase.”

Saving 40 Bucks

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I parked my car in front of a restaurant, ready to run in “for a quick second” to get some take-out. There was a parking meter.
Should I pay the quarter? After all, I will only be here for a moment.

I thought about a question I ask when sharing my faith: “Have you ever stolen anything? Have you ever taken a cookie, a pencil, a paperclip… too much time on a parking meter?”

I wrestled with God.

I will only be in there for 4 minutes. I don’t need to pay a quarter for 4 minutes! Surely God wouldn’t mind…

“…too much time on a parkiiiiiiinnnnnggggg meeeettttteeeerrrr?”

Dang! I couldn’t get away from that question. I was stuck, conscience stricken by the eighth Commandment—His unchanging, permanent, moral law: “Do not steal.”

“Have you ever stolen anything?”

Opening my ashtray, I grudgingly dug out twenty-five cents and reluctantly—bitterly—dropped it in the meter to pay for my 4 MINUTES! of parking, then went inside the restaurant shaking my head.

I paid the bill, tipped the cashier, and picked up the bag of food all within a lousy 4 MINUTES!, opened the door to exit… when suddenly I saw—the meter maid chalking my tire!
She then buzzed on up the street hoping to catch some other scofflaw wanting to save two bits.

I’m no thief. And God just saved me 160 quarters—in parking fines.

—you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? —Romans 2:21

Salvation Vacation 2: Seeing Signs

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

(Read part 1 of 5 here)

I had no desire to do anything but walk on this San Diego Zoo artificial turf… until I saw the sign. Man it was hard to resist doing any of those forbidden things written on the sign. If there was no sign, I would have just walked on by with my family, minding my own business.
null So, too, with the 10 Commandments. The law was added so that the trespass might increase. When I use the Moral Law in my Gospel presentation, it points out the need for redemption in the heart of a sinner. The law made sin even more sinful by revealing what sin is in stark contrast to God’s holiness.

And that’s why I allowed my two daughters to graze on the artificial turf instead.

EV Tips/Loving Lawless Lovers of the Lord

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Even though there is a wealth of evidence from Scripture, history, and the great teachers of the past (including Jesus, Paul, Peter and the gang), in regard to the efficacy of using the 10 Commandments in a Gospel presentation, you will still face the greatest opposition when sharing your faith in this way from… Christians!

Yes, Christians.

Some of the most difficult people to reason with are religious people, people of faith…
null …nay, followers of Christ.

Make sure that when you share this Biblical principle of using the Law with a believing friend that you remain reasonable. Don’t fight. Don’t argue about it. Remain calm. Take a deep breath and… give them a copy of “Hell’s Best Kept Secret” or direct them to the Living Waters website where they can hear this teaching for free. I have found that some “get it” while others don’t. That’s okay. Remember, it is Hell’s best kept secret.

If your Christian brethren insult the teaching, the teacher—or even you—understand that there are a few underlying motives for them opposing you:

1) They probably don’t share their faith on a regular basis and are feeling threatened.

2) They are afraid to share their faith and don’t want to be exposed as cowards.

3) They aren’t really Christians.

So what should you do? What is the proper response from an evangelist who is highly effective, but faces opposition from a cowardly, unbelieving, disobedient Christian who rejects all convincing arguments that using the Law is the most biblical way in reaching the lost?

Do what Jesus did.

When the rich young ruler told Jesus that he had kept all the Commandments since birth, how did He respond to the ruler’s ignorance? He didn’t go into a tizzy and screw up his witness. He refused to huff and puff and blow the man down. And He resisted calling lightning down from Heaven.

No, Jesus simply challenged the young man on what he believed, then looked at him—and loved him.
null We should, too.

Learn the 10 Commandments in 5 Minutes!

Friday, June 1st, 2007

All week I’ve been discussing the 10 Commandments and their use in Gospel proclamation. I made a video awhile ago that teaches people to memorize them in less than 5 minutes. Here’s what one person said of the video:

“You have just perfected a practical and easy way for anyone to learn the 10 commandments and a FUN way that children will enjoy learning them that makes this invaluable. Thank you for the thought and love that went into doing this.”

That Mean Ole Schoolmaster

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The 10 Commandments are the standard by which God will judge our lives—did we keep them? If we have not, then each transgression of the Law is sin. On Judgment Day we will be found guilty and end up in Hell forever to pay for our sins ourselves.

“Oh no!” you may gasp. “What must I do to be saved from Hell?”

And that is the right question to ask. The Law is like a nasty, grouchy schoolmarm pointing sinners to the cross.
null Galatians 3:24– “Therefore the Law has become our tutor (KJV: schoolmaster) to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” (NASB)

FOUNDations: Charles Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

“I do not believe that any man can preach the Gospel who does not preach the Law.”
null “Lower the Law and you dim the light by which man perceives his guilt; this is a very serious loss to the sinner rather than a gain; for it lessens the likelihood of his conviction and conversion. I say you have deprived the Gospel of its ablest auxiliary [most powerful weapon] when you have set aside the Law. You have taken away from it the schoolmaster that is to bring men to Christ… They will never accept grace till they tremble before a just and holy Law. Therefore the Law serves a most necessary purpose, and it must not be removed from its place.”
Spurgeon was considered to be The Prince of Preachers. Read about him here!

Law for the Lawless!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The 10 Commandments are meant for those who don’t know God, couldn’t care less about God, or even deny that there there is a God. The Law shows them the error (the sin) of their ways, whether they agree with you or not, whether they agree with God or not.
null 1 Timothy 1:8-10: “We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbeakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious: for those that kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers…”

FOUNDations: George Whitefield (1714-1770)

“First, then, before you can speak peace to your hearts, you must be made to see, made to feel, made to weep over, made to bewail, your actual transgressions against the Law of God.”

Converting the Soul

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Psalm 19:7– “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.” (NIV)
The NASB version says: “…restoring the soul;
King James: “…converting the soul.”

It’s the Law of God, the 10 Commandments, that does this work in the heart of a sinner, including hardened atheists, wacked-out New-Agers—and your family members! It’s God’s prescribed plan to show a sinner the error of their ways. Forget the “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life” man-centered presentation when sharing your faith.

It only breeds false false converts.

FOUNDations: Martin Luther (1483 – 1546)

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

“The first duty of the Gospel preacher is to declare God’s Law and show the nature of sin.”
null “Satan, the god of dissension stirs up daily new sects. And last of all which of all others I should never have forseen or once suspected, he has raised up a sect such as teach that men should not be terrified by the Law, but gently exhorted by the preaching of the grace of Christ.”

Luther started the Protestant Reformation in the 1500’s. Read about him here!

We Need to Remember!!!

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Today we remember all those who fought and died—over 1 million men and women— for this country’s freedom. Because of their sacrifice, we are able to share our faith freely!

It’s also a time to remember the freedom we have in Jesus Christ—who died to set us free from sin!

And there is something else we need to remember: The 10 Commandments.
This is God’s moral law that demonstrates God’s standard of perfection, a standard we need to keep perfectly if we want to be in relationship to Him. Unfortunately, no one can live up to this standard, that is why Christ died for all the Commandments we have broken. Sin is transgression of the Law of God (1 John 3:4).

For those who share their faith, they need to use the 10 Commandments to show people where they have fallen short. The Commandments bring the knowledge of sin and stops sinners from justifying themselves that they are good enough to get to Heaven (Roman 3:19-20).

Sadly, the majority of Christians have never been taught to use the Commandments when sharing their faith, which leaves them impotent in their witness. Most Christians—indeed most people—do not even know the 10 Commandments.

This week, I am dedicating this blog’s postings to the 10 Commandments. We need to remember God’s standard. Memorial Day is a good day to start.

You will have the opportunity to see “The 10 Commandments Rap,” read “The Cajun 10 Commandments,” learn what evangelists of old thought about these Commandments in regard to giving the Gospel message, and you can even see a video of “The Atheist’s 10 Commandments.” Stay tuned…
