Results of Our Scary Lawyer’s Letter, Part 2

Over the last few weeks I posted about how one of our local Bible Study leaders from Hope Chapel, Hermosa Beach, was stopped from conducting his study in one of the meeting rooms of a local library because of a L.A. County administrator’s misunderstanding of the term “separation of church and state.” I followed up this “misunderstanding” with an email to our lawyer, he wrote a letter and, like magic, the matter was resolved.

The Bible Study leader is a humble, gracious and unassuming man of God who was willing to let the whole matter slide, but I encouraged him to let me pursue this because if we didn’t, they might forbid other Christian groups from meeting in their private rooms, too. He agreed.

Here’s the kind email he sent to me (used with his permission):

Last night was our group’s first meeting at this library, since the “misunderstanding”! The meeting went well, and there was nothing unusual. The 3 library employees that I interacted with were all nice & professional, just like the first meeting. Pleasant surprises are nice to see, especially since you stepped in to defend this group. Thank you very much, Pastor Steve.

  1. Way to Shepherd the flock, Pastor Steve!

  2. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble …” United States Constitution – First Amendment

Rights will be challenged, and need to be defended while we can, but what happens if we’re not exercising our rights? Defeated already?!

  3. Nothing is too tough that God cannot handle for us in any situation. For Apostle Paul shares in his letter to the church at Ephesus I quote from Ephesians 3:20-21: “I pray that Christ Jesus and the church will forever bring praise to God. His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Amen” (unquote) And all will how great our God is. God will always find a way where there is no way out even if we are unable to exercise our rights. Only believe. Matthew 19:26.
