DO IT IN THE MORNING—The Poke-in-the-Eye Devotional, 1/10/24

THE ONLY WAY ANYONE CAN TRUST GOD with all their heart is to be deliberate and disciplined in their devotions to Jesus.

Morning is best.

Yes, you can have your Quiet Time in the evening, after work, when you’re too tired, after you’ve put the kids to bed, exhausted, and after spending time with your spouse.

Then collapse into bed, read half a Proverb, and fall asleep.

No! Do it first thing.

Jesus had his quiet time in the morning as did these folks:

Abraham: Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. (Genesis 19)

Job: Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of his children, (Job 1)

Jacob: Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. (Genesis 28)

Moses: So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, (Exodus 34)

Hannah and Elkanah: Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord…. (1Samuel 1:19) (BONUS: Read the rest of the verse to see what they did after worship!” )

David: In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait expectantly. (Psalm 5)

Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China said your devotions ought to be in the morning because “You don’t tune up the instruments after the concert is over. That’s stupid. It’s logical to tune them up before you start!”
