Martyrs: Iranian Christians Taken

Pastor Vahik Abrahamian and his wife Sonia Keshish-Avanesian were with their friends, Arash Kermanjani and his wife Arezo Teymouri, when all four were detained on September 4, 2010.

For the first 40 days, they were held in solitary confinement and reportedly suffered physical abuse and psychological pressure. Pastor Vahik’s wife Sonia, who was pregnant when she was arrested, is said to have suffered a miscarriage – her fourth.

The two couples, who are close friends, were arrested at the Abrahamians’ home in Hamadan, west Iran, and taken initially to the Ministry of Islamic Guidance prison.

The couples, who are now being held in Hamadan prison, have been accused of various offenses, including propagating Christianity, opposing the Islamic Republic of Iran, and having contact with exiled opposition figures.

Release contacts have expressed concern about the couples’ well-being – and about their prospects for justice.

I don’t want to take away from the horrible injustice these people have suffered, but I’m confused on just who you think are real Christians and who are not. For instance, many who read here don’t think Catholics are real Christians. From what I’ve read, the pastor, his wife and friends belong to the Armenian church. This is not Roman Catholic of course, the Eastern Churches split with Rome fairly early on, and of course, they claim that they have the true spirit of the original Church and not those in the West.

I know little of Eastern Churches, but they are liturgical. I’m fairly certain that they believe that the Eucharist actually does transform into the Body of Christ, similar to what the Roman Catholics believe. I highly doubt that they preach an evangelical message.

That they are martyrs, I agree. That this sort of persecution needs to be stopped, again I agree. But can you call them Christian martyrs if they practice and preach a Christianity that differs so completely with yours? Can it be said that they suffer for Christ if you think they’re preaching a false Gospel? If they can be considered true Christians, why can’t the Roman Catholic church be considered the same?
