The Three “Do-Nots” of Open Air Preaching—OBEYED!

On Friday I posted the three “Do-Nots” of open air preaching which were: #1: Do Not hold a Bible and wave it when preaching in the open air; #2: Do Not forget to stand on something; and #3: Do Not forget to smile every now and then. (Read the article here.)

What inspired me to write about these tips was an article sent to me from a new open air preacher in Canada, Paul Latour, who along with his adventures preaching at a “Gay Pride Parade”, also included some photos that caused me some alarm: He violated all of the “DO-NOTS”.

He has since been chastened and sent me a photo proving that he takes correction well.

    Hi Steve,

    I generally hold a Bible while open air preaching. And I even use it to point. I see nothing wrong with it.

    I completely agree with you Steve.

    The 3 “do-nots” are practical. I understand that not everyone will agree with them and God will still use them regardless.
    However, we are supposed to be as “wise as serpents and gentle as doves”. Personally I do not believe waving a big black Bible around is very wise. Your only likely to antagonize instead of drawing people to the main point – the message of the Bible.

    Hey Steve,

    Thanks for the good points on street preaching, while I agree with 2 out of 3 of the” do nots” I have perached both with and without my Big Ole Bible, in many diffrent parts of the country and I find that some people are offended while outhers are receptive,either way,but when a preson is convicted (which is what we should hope and pray for) they will either harden their heart, or yield to the sprit. I have had people want to see my bible at times to ask about a certin verse or text for various reasons.
