The Gay, the Bad and the Middle

June 18th, 2013

I take great satisfaction that as an evangelism team we can bridge the troubled waters of heresy and blasphemy when going to various cultural events. Take, for example, our recent venture to the West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade.

On one side of the parade route are the lost and confused gay religious leaders, offering false peace and hope to a group of people dead in their sins and trespasses, believing the lie that it’s okay to be gay in God’s eyes, according to Scripture. No matter that the Bible clearly says that it’s sin, they have their own peculiar hermeneutics that justifies this sinful lifestyle—and all in the name of Christ.

On the other side, the “Christian thugs,” as some call them, shout their condemnation and hateful remarks in a decidedly unChrist-like way, bringing shame to the name of our risen Lord.

On the heresy side, along with empty prayers offered to a false god, is a worship team playing at full volume, in an attempt to drown out the Christian haters.

The blasphemy side continues their jaundiced preaching, ignoring the fifty foot rainbow flag being carried back and forth in front of their platform to obliterate their view and lessen their credibility, a credibility already diminished.

And there we were. In the middle.

As biblical evangelists, we want to be winsome, cheerful, and tactful when presenting the truth of God’s Word—just like Scripture says:

And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. ( 2 Timothy 2:24-26)

The dictionary defines an ambassador as a diplomatic official of the highest rank, sent by one sovereign or state to another as its resident representative. We as Christians want to be skillful and gracious when presenting our case to the other side, because we are representing the One who is of the highest rank.

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. (2 Corinthians 5:20a)

Our message is this: We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:20b)

We have been given a great mission: to declare that God forgives sinners. We have been entrusted with a great ministry, too. A ministry of reconciliation.

All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; (2 Corinthians 5:18)

The best proof that we are doing the right thing comes from both sides of the parade route.

A gay advocate wrote, and I think, accurately, about us,

Because they are comparing themselves to the God-militia and often disdain the LGBT affirming churches and Christians at the Pride events, they envision themselves as the moderate and “right” way to reach out to the LGBT community.

I try, over and over, in person, on line and in blogs to let these street preachers/evangelists know that they are perhaps MORE offensive and damaging. I have a few years experience of witnessing the attempts of these do-gooders coming to Pride events and effectively hugging the LGBT community with knives in their hands.

And from the “Christian hater” side:

“He only strengthens the hand of the wicked but it made him feel good and that’s all that really matters.” This Christian “evangelist” is deceiving this man, sending him to hell, and it’s all about himself feeling good and loving. Epitome of selfishness; that is not the love of God at all. These types are worse than the wicked they are trying to save!

The lesson to learn? Sometimes, it’s best to be a middle-of-the-road Christian.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. (1 Corinthains 13:1)

The Morning After

June 17th, 2013

This article by WORLD magazine writer, Andree Seu Peterson, reflects my heart and explains why I’m motivated to become even more involved in Christian activism.

Sons of old Congregationalists became Unitarians. Sons of Unitarians became social workers. Children of social workers became LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or transsexual, queer or questioning, intersex, ally or asexual ). This is America in a nutshell from the 1700s to the 2000s—and what I learned from Francis Schaeffer and Dr. D. Clair Davis.

Things are accelerating now, like a snowball down a mountain. Not just Christians saying that, but everyone. The godless exult in it, of course, like the bad boys brought by Honest John to Pleasure Island, given permission to drink and smoke and wreck the place and do all the things good little boys don’t.

They do not see that it’s a trap, and that after they make jackasses of themselves they become real jackasses, sprouting donkey ears and losing their humanity. Now the end-time verses of the Bible kick in:

“But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. … These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption” (2 Peter 2:12-19).

A good journalist proves her point with quotes and sources, but the proofs are all around and I would bore you with redundancy: Read the rest by clicking here.

Interview with a Gay “Christian”

June 14th, 2013

Last year, I interviewed Rich at the 2012 West Hollywood Pride Parade and asked some very pointed questions about where he would spend eternity. Well, to my delight, I saw him again and he remembered us as the friendly Christians. (The “Christian Thugs” were just down the street. More on them next week. By the way, our message delivered with friendliness and tact is very damaging according to one gay advocate. Read her critique here.)

In this interview you will learn how to answer:

  • What if someone is born gay?
  • Why Jesus didn’t speak about homosexuality.
  • Why “Gay Christians” need to repent.
  • How close to Heaven can you get?

Disclaimer: I called him “brother” only in the sense of a friend, like saying “bro” or “dude.” No, I don’t consider him a Christian brother.

The Gay Bar Challenge

June 12th, 2013

The ultimate challenge. A recent graduate from our evangelism class, “Sharing Your Faith Made Easy,”  must face his fears and hand out giant $100 bills with a Gospel message on the back to a group of men drinking at a gay bar. (Click here to read the message.)

Will they take them or reject him and mercilessly belittle him for what he stands for?

After teaching “Sharing Your Faith Made Easy” for 6 years, I passed it on to my good friend, Ed Lee. This class will give you a heart for the lost, increase your zeal for God, and cause you to live a more authentic, holy life. This 10 week class starts Thursday, June 20th, from 7-9 PM, at Hope Chapel, Hermosa Beach.

  • Our evangelism adventure for Saturday, June 15th will be the Redondo Beach Pier: Meet at Hope Chapel at noon to pray, eat pizza and then go out to share our faith. We leave promptly at 12:30 pm, returning by 3:30 pm.
  • Our college ministry is off for the summer and will resume in September.

Gay Supporter Criticizes Our Evangelism at Pride Parade

June 11th, 2013

Here’s a different perspective from a gay supporter’s blog who took issue with our team’s  style of evangelism at last Sunday’s Pride Parade. It’s an interesting read. Here’s a sample:

“It is Gay Pride season. Just as predictable as the rainbow flags and great music are the street preachers and condemnation. Some of these street evangelists present a “softer” approach; they are not bullhorn carrying or “sodomite” screaming. They arrive with smiles and slick tracts and smooth “Hey guy, I love ya” banter, but they too are destructive.

“For a concrete example of the smiling, you-must-stop-being gay example of street preacher, I am going to use Pastor Steve Sanchez, Hope Chapel Christian Church, LA. He attended West Hollywood (WeHo) Pride yesterday.

“I have offered to give him insights and reasons why the actions of his team are damaging, and he is not hearing.” Read the rest here and let me know what you think.

Angels of Death: Past, Present, Future

June 10th, 2013

“The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human.” —Adolf Hitler

“…the fact that a being is human, and alive, does not in itself tell us whether it is wrong to take that being’s life.” —Peter Singer, Professor of Bioethics at Princeton*

Elie Wiesel, in his book Night, a first person account of his surviving Auschwitz at age 15, describes one horror he witnessed:

We did not yet know which was the better side, right or left; which road led to prison and which to the crematory. But for the moment I was happy; I was near my father. Our procession continued to move slowly forward.

Another prisoner came up to us:

“Satisfied?”

“Yes,” someone replied.

“Poor devils, you’re going to the crematory.”

He seemed to be telling the truth. Not far from us, flames were leaping up from a ditch, gigantic flames. They were burning something. A lorry drew up at the pit and delivered its load–little children. Babies! Yes, I saw it– saw it with my own eyes . . . those children in the flames. (Is it surprising that I could not sleep after that? Sleep had fled from my eyes.)

So this was where we were going. A little farther on was another and larger ditch for adults.

I pinched my face. Was I still alive? Was I awake? I could not believe it. How could it be possible for them to burn people, children, and for the world to keep silent? No, none of this could be true. It was a nightmare….

Dr. Henry Morgentaler also survived the Holocaust suffering through the torments of Dachau. He moved to Canada and became an abortionist where he gained fame killing babies. Ironically, in 2008 then-Governor General Michaelle Jean named Morgentaler to the Order of Canada saying that he had been selected for “his commitment to increased health care options for women, his determined efforts to influence Canadian public policy and his leadership in humanist and civil liberties organizations.” **

Why should anyone be concerned about all this? Cal Thomas wrote:***

“…if you are reading this, you have survived abortion and infanticide, but you are just one accident away from admission to the twilight zone of brain damage that could lead doctors to finish what the accident failed to do….

“The Nazis tried eugenics. They were unsuccessful, but it took a world war to stop them. The American medical community, ably assisted by technology and some of those ever-present ‘clergy’ who can always be relied on to give their blessing to almost any horror, are proceeding down the eugenics slope with virtually no opposition.

“Unless you can guarantee that you will never be critically ill or injured and that you will die in your own bed at a ripe old age, you had better be concerned about this.”

“There are two victims in every abortion:
a dead baby and a dead conscience.”

Those close to the family say the victim lived nearby and heard his neighbor’s burglar alarm. Neighbor Jerry Wayne Waller then apparently went outside to see what was going on.

“The Christian Apology to Gay People” Controversy

June 7th, 2013

I posted my article “Why I Will Apologize at the WeHo Pride Parade” to Facebook and was surprised at how some Christians actually thought I was carrying out a plan derived from the very pit of Hell itself! (Go to Facebook and scroll down to Wednesday, June 5, 2013.)

You must read the article, but in a nutshell, my strategy for engaging the West Hollywood homosexual community on Sunday is to start off my Gospel conversation with a heartfelt apology because some,  in the name of Christianity, have singled gays for some gross bullying. I will use my apology as a springboard for sharing the full counsel of God with the listener.

Though most understood and agreed with my tactic, others didn’t:

One man wrote: Steve S…. For you to apologize to those who are haters of God and perverters of His ways is unimaginable… God’s laws are written on your heart and you know better. Shame on you for the shame and disgrace you bring His holy name!”

Then he finished with:

Have you been to a “Gay Pride” parade? Have you seen the gross perversion that is flaunted there? And shall you walk up and say,”Excuse me would you please stop performing [perverted acts] with that other man so I can apologize to you for all those bad things “Christians” have said about you?” Then you can tell them, “You can go back to mocking God when I’m finished!”

The fact that you are a “pastor”, an Ambassador of Christ and one who presents the “Gospel” to others… The message you give people may well be the only hope in their life ever and if it’s anything than the true “Gospel” then woe to you because you will stand before God and be judged accordingly… Your responsibility is much more than those who don’t pastor or teach… And in light of full disclosure, you seem like a nice guy and very likable… But so is Bill Clinton.

Love is choosing the highest good of another. In my subjective opinion, if you follow thru on your OP then I neither see you as loving the homosexuals, those who are observing you and you influence nor loving God. My advice would be to consider your ways and to proceed carefully… God’s loving kindness to you.

Another evangelist, from the East Coast who is very prominent in the news for getting arrested, expressed his disgust with this comment: Shame on you

One gay man joined the discussion, understood my purpose and affirmed it: Read the rest of this entry »

Why I Will Apologize at the WeHo Pride Parade

June 5th, 2013

I apologized to the gay community on behalf of true Christians everywhere at last year’s Pride Parade in West Hollywood—and plan on doing so again this Sunday when we attend! (Meet at Hope Chapel at 8:15am to carpool or leave a comment and I’ll tell you where to meet us.) Why would I apologize? Because Christians have shamelessly preached a hate-filled Gospel, misrepresenting their God-given ambassadorship on behalf of Christ to those lost in their Pride.

Would you, evangelist, have the same attitude as Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army, when it comes to the lost? “Let them see the tears in your eyes; or, if you cannot weep, let them hear the tears in your voice, and let them realize that you feel their danger, and are in distress for them.”

The homosexual community, for the most part, hates born again Christians due to their judgmental, bile-spewing, finger-pointing “good news.” One street evangelist last year actually mocked the WeHo parade-goers, rebuking them, insulting them and inflaming them with unloving diatribe. Watch:

A reporter from WORLD magazine interviewed me last week about street evangelism and made reference to the street preacher in the video above saying, “I don’t believe he has a clear understanding of the message of the Bible.” (See my Facebook dialog with this preacher here.)

Hence, my apology.

So, what will be my game-plan? The same as last year. Here’s an excerpt from an article I wrote before the 2012 Pride Parade detailing my intended dialogue:

…I’m called to go [to the Pride Parade] to show love, to speak truth… and to apologize on behalf of true Christians everywhere. I will tell them that I am sorry that the Christian community has not demonstrated tact, poise, reason and grace to those who are in dire need of a Savior.

Don’t get me wrong. I will talk about sin.

Inevitably, I will be asked: “Will God send me to Hell because I’m gay?”

My answer: “No one ever went to Hell because they are gay.”

Immediately, the person softens and I’m able to explain that they have sinned by breaking God’s ten Commandments. They will be judged for lying, stealing, looking with lust, hating or using God’s name as a cuss word. I warn that if they don’t change, they will end up in Hell because God is just. Then I remind them of God’s incredible grace, love and mercy as demonstrated on a cross. That if they repent and trust in Jesus, who suffered and died on their behalf, was buried for three days and rose again, they can be forgiven.

“So you see,” I’ll say, continuing the conversation, “it’s not about you being gay, it’s because you’ve sinned in these other ways. Homosexuality is a sin, it’s just not THE sin.”

When I speak to a gay person, I will be firm, but gentle—just like I am to everybody I talk to.

If I’m asked about whether gays should be married, I will not shrink back from the truth that marriage, as God created it, has always been between a man and a woman. We should never re-define a term to fit our culture’s preferences. Civil unions? Why not?

I will attempt to shake their hand, even give them a hug. I will ask them if they have ever met a Christian like me. Someone friendly, concerned, and gracious.

I suspect the answer will be no.

And that’s a sin.

On Saturday we will also be going to the Palos Verdes Street Fair.
Meet at Hope Chapel at noon to carpool.

What I Said Changed Her Mind

June 3rd, 2013

The woman on the right was entering our local Family Planning Associates to schedule an abortion. This is what I said to change her mind:

change mindI shouted, “Please, don’t kill your baby. God has entrusted you with that life.”

She hesitated, looked toward the door, then back at me.

“Please, we will help you,” I pleaded. “Do you know what they will do to your baby? They will pull off the arms and legs one by one. They will insert scissors into the baby’s head.”

Is this too radical to say to a young, vulnerable, pregnant woman?

No.

I have thirty seconds to change a “customer’s” mind about murdering her child, half a moment before she enters the killing field where she will be lied to, taken advantage of and affirmed that what she will do is a woman’s right. And that it’s perfectly normal to rid herself of this unwanted burden.

Dr. Anthony Levantino, a former abortionist, describes the “normal” process of later-term abortions:

“With suction complete, look for your Sopher clamp. This instrument is about thirteen inches long and made of stainless steel. At the end are located jaws about 2 ½ inches long and about ¾ of an inch wide with rows of sharp ridges or teeth. This instrument is for grasping and crushing tissue. When it gets hold of something, it does not let go. A second trimester D&E abortion is a blind procedure. The baby can be in any orientation or position inside the uterus. Picture yourself reaching in with the Sopher clamp and grasping anything you can. At twenty-four weeks gestation, the uterus is thin and soft so be careful not to perforate or puncture the walls. Once you have grasped something inside, squeeze on the clamp to set the jaws and pull hard–really hard. You feel something let go and out pops a fully formed leg about six inches long. Reach in again and grasp whatever you can. Set the jaw and pull really hard once again and out pops an arm about the same length. Reach in again and again with that clamp and tear out the spine, intestines, heart and lungs.

“The toughest part of a D&E abortion is extracting the baby’s head. The head of a baby that age is about the size of a large plum and is now free floating inside the uterine cavity. You can be pretty sure you have hold of it if the Sopher clamp is spread about as far as your fingers will allow. You will know you have it right when you crush d own on the clamp and see white gelatinous material coming through the cervix. That was the baby’s brains. You can then extract the skull pieces. Many times a little face will come out and stare back at you.

“Congratulations! You have just successfully performed a second trimester Suction D&E abortion. You just affirmed her right to choose. If you refuse to believe that this procedure inflicts severe pain on that unborn child, please think again.”

The woman, Devon, turned around and walked toward our sidewalk, the place where we are are still legally protected to speak the truth in love. I pulled out a Gospel tract with a picture of our President on it. “Who is this on the front of this trillion dollar bill?” I asked.

“Obama,” she replied.

“Did you know that President Obama’s mom was a single parent? Your child could grow up to be the next President.”

A fellow counselor took her by the hand, then led her to the Birth Choice Center down the street. We are confident, that after seeing the ultrasound of her child, she will keep her baby.

June 2013 Evangelism Schedule

May 29th, 2013

Charles Spurgeon wrote: “From all our congregations a bitter cry should go up unto God, unless conversions are continually seen. If our preaching never saves a soul, and is not likely to do so, should we not better glorify God as peasants, or as tradesmen? What honour can the Lord receive from useless ministers? The Holy Ghost is not with us, we are not used of God for his gracious purposes unless souls are quickened into heavenly life. Brethren, can we bear to be useless? Success at the Fiesta Hermosa

May 28th, 2013

Hundreds, yes, hundreds gathered at our “Intelligence Test” Booth to fill out a silly questionnaire that leads into a Gospel conversation.

After they fail (and everyone fails), we gave them a quality Ty Beanie Baby Bear, coupons from Chick Fil-A, a 180Movie DVD, a Gospel tract and church bulletin. Most of all, this gives our more than forty volunteers an opportunity to share their faith in a fun, creative way.

What a great way to commemorate Memorial Weekend, by remembering the One Who died for all!

In Memory of…

May 26th, 2013

May we remember not only those who died so we can live free, but also those who died before they could live free.

Approximate American War Casualties in History: 1,319,729

Approximate Annual Abortions in America: 1,290,000

“When one person dies, it’s a tragedy, but when a million people die, it’s a statistic.” —Joseph Stalin

Stalin is responsible for 20 million deaths during his reign. Chairman Mao Zedong killed over 40 million when he led China in the Cultural Revolution. Genghis Khan in the early 13th century, eliminated 40 million.

Statistics. They don’t really move you. It’s hard to fathom that many deaths. Thousands of babies are aborted every day in the United States. Such figures are rarely considered news, let alone tragedy.

Even for those within the church it is difficult to comprehend the sheer magnitude of abortion in America today and, indeed, the world. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons our American culture hardly bats an eye when informed that over 55 million babies have need killed since abortion has been legal.

John Jefferson Davis wrote: “Abortion in America today is not just a mass of statistics or a massive social problem, but an intensely personal reality that profoundly affects the lives of countless individuals. . . . The debate is not a theoretical one, but is daily being played out in abortion clinics, intensive care units, and legislative halls across the nation.”

Memorial Weekend Evangelism: Fiesta Hermosa

May 22nd, 2013

We need your help this Memorial Day weekend as we will be sponsoring a booth at the Fiesta Hermosa all three days.  We give out Intelligence Tests, Chick Fil-A coupons, Gospel tracts, 180 Movie DVDs, and…high quality stuffed animals.

There are strange juxtapositions at this fair. Notice our friends from the Holy Bible Team glorifying God in a quiet, dignified fashion (like they always do) in front of the Hustler Casino booths.

And what amazes me is that people still line up to take that silly Intelligence Test that ultimately leads them to the important eternal issues.

Watch this video of an atheist changing his mind about going to Hell as we present the test to him in the video below:

Here’s where to go if you want to join us Saturday thru Monday from 8am to 6pm: Park at the Northrop Grumman parking lot on Aviation and Marine Ave. in Redondo Beach (Google directions) and take the shuttle bus down to the fair because there is zero parking at the fair. Shuttle service is on the other side of the Chevron Station. Take the shuttle down to the drop off on PIER Ave. Walk down Pier Ave, we are on the right side, on the upper part of Pier just off Hermosa Ave.  Look for the “Intelligence Test” sign.

Candidates vs. Christ: Who’s Elected?

May 21st, 2013

The Los Angeles Mayoral race is on!

Two candidates, Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti, are vying for the top slot in America’s 2nd largest city. Who will win? More importantly, how do they currently stand before Christ?  The bigger question is not whether the people elect them, but has God?

When I gave each a Giant Money Gospel tract and a firm admonition at the last Golden Dragon Parade a few months back, here were their reactions as revealed in these two 17 second videos:

ERIC GARCETTI: ELECT?

WENDY GREUEL: ELECT?

So…are they the elect? If they profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and repent of their sins, yes!

If not, no.

Simple as that.

No recount needed.

Pre-born Vs. Newborn Differences

May 19th, 2013

My class, “Abortion is About God: Reframing a Moral Issue” starts on June 6, 2013, from 7-8:30pm at Hope Chapel, Hermosa Beach. Perhaps you will want to sign up here, have your eyes opened and want to do something to help bring awareness to the pro-life cause.

Here’s a sample of what you will learn:

Scott Klusendorf says that there are only four differences between a pre-born and newborn. He uses the acronym S.L.E.D.

newborn

Size: Does how big you are determine when who you are?

Level of development: Are 20-year-olds more human than 14-year-olds, since they are smarter and stronger?

Environment: Des being inside a house make you more or less of a person than being outside? Does being located in his mother’s body rather than outside make a child less human?

Degree of dependency: Does dependence upon another determine who you are? Is someone with Alzheimer’s or on kidney dialysis less of a person? Am I, an insulin dependent diabetic, less of a person than before I contracted the disease?

The question is not how old or big or smart or inconvenient the unborn are, but who they are. The answer is simple: they are human beings. (“Why Pro life?” Randy Alcorn, Pg. 31)
